I just randomly thought of something. Does some kind of bluetooth adapter exist that I could plug into my car's USB port (instead of my phone's cable) and connect to my phone via bluetooth, and still be able to use the steering wheel mounted controls? Car is a 2012 Civic for reference

Almost certainly not

I know there is an adapter that does but no idea if the steering wheels controls will work. I assume volume would since that is controlled by the deck but not sure about track change.

I'm completely unable to picture what it is you mean. You want your phone to still connect through the usb but wirelessly?

I'm definitely going with no.

I'm not even sure I understand what you are looking for. You want the wheel controls to control your phone?

In the Civic, there are buttons on the steering wheel that control the music while your phone is plugged into the USB port. I would like to find some sort of dongle/thingy that would plug into the usb port instead of plugging in my phone's charging cable, and allow me to connect to that dongle via bluetooth, while still being able to use the wheel mounted buttons to control the playback.

Basically. When you phrase it like that I realize that I'm just having dumb ideas. Serves me right for staying up all night...

I've found one that connects to the auxiliary input that is bluetooth, but I don't want to have to worry about charging it/the wheel controls still won't work

Theoretically possible. From a coding aspect; nigh unthinkable. It'd have to be more than just a dongle as it would have to have enough processing power to accept a function input (different with each make I would fathom), interpret the request and send request via bluetooth to the mobile device in a function it would understand.

This opens up more questions, because this may be achievable. Is it iPhone only?

www.gromaudio.com

Might be able to find what you need there. I have the USB2.

After extensive interneting, I think this is the only thing that exists at this point. http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimit… But given time and some development money I could probably makes something that converted a cars usb port to do bluetooth.

I'm using an iphone, I've never tried the system with anything else.

You could try a bluetooth dongle to see if it works. Looks like if you had the 2014 version of i-MID, it would be built in.

If it's like most of them, it's not iPhone only. It mounts the phone as a drive searches root and some other folders (/Music, /Download, etc.) and indexes the files. Then it pulls the file when selected. The actual decoding, track switching, etc is handled in the car (ie the phone is just acting as a USB stick for all intents and purposes...in fact most of them can also play off USB sticks/harddrives if the file structure is set up appropriately).

I know it's capable of mounting the drive, but the concern is sending commands via USB back to the storage device. With the 2012 vintage of i-MID, I don't believe it mounts the drive when it's identified as an i-device. It's trying to include extra features, including hands free calling (without having bluetooth) and is sending commands back to the phone.

Hopefully with a BT dongle, it would just mount as a drive, but lose the phone features.
